Groom Gives $1000 to His Brother That His Fiancée Wanted for the Wedding Budget, Sparking Disagreement Over the Couple’s Finances and an Exorbitant Wedding Budget That Is Already $10K Over: ‘The Bill Went up to $40K'

A groom-to-be questions whether his fiancée should have any say over a $1,000 gift to his brother from his personal savings after their wedding budget grows from $30,000 to over $40,000.

It's easy to get emotionally attached to the idea of a dream wedding. But where does the dream end and reality set in? And, for that matter, how much should your partner have say over how much you choose to spend on family?

For the couple, this is (potentially) a once-in-a-lifetime event and a chance to celebrate your relationship. And this is also your one chance to force everyone you know to celebrate you and your relationship. Not only that, it's really the only time in life you can hold everyone you know to ransom to celebrate you since your birthdays as a child. And the only time after your wedding when this will happen is your funeral. 

Anyways, on that pleasant thought, there's so much pressure mounting because of the cost (which increased with every guest you added) and the fact that so many people (that you invited) will be there to witness it. It may not necessarily be fashionable to hold a large grand wedding (in this economy?), but there are those among us who still value this and are willing to sacrifice the cost of a car on holding a big celebration.

Disagreements on spending aren't simple. People have different values from both how they were raised and from their own making about what necessitates responsible spending, and what is a waste. Some may consider giving generously to a sibling to be a given. Another would never do that and might think that it's obscene.  

Comparisons and challenging each other add to this, and over time the resentment can grow. For those who maintain separate personal accounts, as many do in this modern era, these disagreements can get even more complicated. Even when you contribute equally toward shared expenses, there comes a point where you start thinking about what your common goals and earnings are. 

This groom wants to give his brother $1,000 as a wedding gift, but his fiancée argues that the money should go toward their own wedding. The couple originally agreed to spend $30,000, and each contributed $15,000, but the projected cost increased to $40,000. The couple agreed to save monthly toward the difference, although the groom says he has been saving while his fiancée plans to rely on a theoretical future bonus. As she continues to add to the wedding budget, she has proposed another $5,000 in additions. The groom doesn't want to do this and believes he should remain free to use his personal money for his brother's gift

    Any Assumption_2023 I will never understand why people are paying so much for weddings. $40 thousand is a downpayment on a house, or a decent new car. Its your money and you already gave your fiance half the original budget. Give your brother the money If you want to. NTA.

It sounds like your fiancée might be stressing about the wedding budget - have you tried speaking to her about it, rather than just assuming that she's good for the money and leaving her to it?
